Dance UK is the national voice for the dance industry. The organisation’s mission is to be the central support body for the dance industry, and the lead advocacy organisation representing the needs of the dance sector to Government and funders. Dance UK’s authority is derived from its membership which includes dancers, dance companies, choreographers, students, managers, vocational colleges, publicists, producers, theatres, and dance agencies. Dance UK works in partnership with other key dance development organisations, such as the Foundation for Community Dance, Youth Dance England, Council for Dance Education and Training, Akademi, SAMPAD, National Dance Teachers Association and ADAD, referring to their specialist areas of expertise.

Dance UK’s activities include:

· Facilitating the networks for dance professionals. These are peer-to-peer groups who support and offer advice to each other through regular meetings and e-networks. Dance UK runs include the Dance Managers’ Group, the National Communications Forum, the Choreographers’ Group, the Independent Dance Artists’ Group, the Physiotherapy Advisory Group, and the Medical Advisory Group.

· Being the main expert body specialising in dancers’ health, leading the sector in research and initiatives to improve dancers' healthcare provision and wellbeing.

· Providing information and guidance for the public and dance professionals, including producing publications ranging from fact sheets on nutrition, to books such as Dance Teaching Essentials.

· Producing one-off events responding to specific needs of Dance UK members and the wider industry, such as Launch the professional development day for recent graduates and third year students studying at vocational dance schools and Choreoforum the national conference for choreographers.

· Providing the Medical Practitioners Register - a database of UK medical practitioners and complementary therapists with experience of working with dancers. It includes physiotherapists, osteopaths, doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, counsellors, nutritionists, massage therapists, body conditioning practitioners and many others. The practitioners on this register have indicated that they have experience of and a particular interest in treating dancers and are fully qualified in their discipline. They have been suggested by, given referees from or have themselves worked in the dance profession. The service is free and available online or by calling Dance UK.

· Running the Choreographers Directory - a database of freelance choreographers with experience in the arts and entertainment industries. Dance UK matches choreographers on the database to prospective employers. The service is available free online or by calling Dance UK.

· Publishing Dance UK News, a quarterly magazine providing the latest industry information and artistic debate.

· Lobbying on behalf of dance in all its forms to Government and funding bodies and organising the programme for the All Party Parliamentary Dance Group which aims to raise the profile of dance in government.

Dance UK is a charity funded by the Arts Council England, membership fees and various charitable trusts and foundations. It was established in 1982. The organisation has close working relationships with the other main theatre and industry bodies, such as the National Campaign for the Arts, Independent Theatre Council and Equity.
